Run Like the Wind in San Ramon Half Marathon
and
5k Run/Walk
Title Sponsor
On a vibrant spring day in late March,
approximately 1,000 eager athletes gathered in Windemere to “Run Like the Wind” during
San Ramon’s second annual half marathon and 5k fun run. This event, which has become a signature spring race of the East Bay, benefited
local youth athletic groups.
The idea for this race was based on the spring/summer marathon schedule. “There weren’t
many long distance races in early spring,” said
Brad Morris, program manager for the City
of San Ramon. “We decided to fill that hole
with a fun route that would introduce people
to this new area. It’s a challenging course, but helps people gauge their marathon
training progress.”
When developing the route, race planners
used existing courses from local running
clubs as a framework. “One of our challenges
was finding 13.1 miles that were interesting
and wouldn’t disrupt too much city traffic,”
said Morris. “Windemere turned out to be an
ideal location.”
The Dougherty Station Community Center
served as home base for the event. “The
community center enabled us to accommodate
1,000 runners and everything associated with hosting an event like this,” continued Morris.
Windemere has been the title sponsor for the
past two years, and will continue sponsorship
in 2009. “Windemere’s sponsorship helps us
offset many of the costs associated with this
event,” said Morris. “Because of Windemere’s
financial support, we were able to make the
price for the event more appealing.”
Trophies were awarded to the top male, female
and team finishers of each race. And runners
were treated to a variety of refreshments after
the race at the bustling Dougherty Station
Community Center. For more information

“We’ve gotten a lot of positive feedback so far,”
said Morris. “We are looking forward to a great
event for years to come.”
